	The Two Oceans Aquarium, situated on the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront in Cape Town, South Africa, opened its doors in 1995. This state of the art tourist attraction and education facility offers its visitors the opportunity to experience marine life beyond the African waves. Since its opening, more than 3 million visitors, including 850 000 children, have come face to face with the great diversity of marine creatures. 	Nestled in a sheltered cove between Simon’s Town and Cape Point, Boulders has become world famous for its thriving colony of African Penguins and magnificent, wind sheltered beaches. In the past, Boulders has served as a whaling station, a base for trek fishermen and even a prisoner-of-war camp during the South African Anglo Boer War. Today, the area provides excellent viewing spots for whales as well as penguins, and also features fabulous bathing beaches – the most popular being Boulders Beach – with water temperatures reflecting those of the warmer Indian Ocean even though False Bay is part of the Atlantic Ocean. But there’s more to Boulders than just a pretty beach. Indigenous plants provide a haven to numerous butterflies and birds, whilst its numerous reefs and sheltered inlets are home to a number of animals. The most endangered of these being the African Penguin. Listed in the Red Data Book as a vulnerable species, only 10% of the 1,5 million-strong Penguin population that existed in 1910, remain at the end of the 20th century. Previously named the Jackass Penguin because of their donkey-like braying, if you’re looking for the best view of these penguins, Foxy Beach, with its newly-constructed boardwalk, can take you within metres of the birds. This elevated boardwalk provides excellent opportunities for spotting Southern Right and Bryde’s Whales too (between August and December). Boulders also offers some beautiful forest walks. Wild mammals include the Rock Hyrax (or dassie), Cape Clawless Otter, Cape Grey Mongoose, Water Mongoose and large Spotted Genet. A number of reptiles (including chameleons) have also been recorded here. Off the land; whales, seals, sharks and dolphins are often found in the sheltered bays surrounding Boulders. If you decide to visit (and we’d strongly recommend you do ), an information service for visitors is provided by volunteers and staff and a detailed bird list from the pay points. Some beaches may become inaccessible during high tide – so check the tables before you go – unless getting marooned on a deserted beach was just what you were after…
