ENJOY A SENSATIONAL SUMMER’S DAY AT UITKYK

Stellenbosch wine estate Uitkyk is offering delicious gourmet picnics and cheese platters that will guarantee anyone a memorable daytrip to the Cape Winelands this summer.

Enjoy a delicious picnic on the sprawling lawns surrounding the estate’s neo-classical manor house from 1788, or on its terrace while the kids keep themselves entertained on the Dreamweavers jungle gym. You can also order a cheese platter in the tasting centre to savour with some of Uitkyk’s delicious wines.

A gourmet picnic basket for two at R300, including a bottle of wine, is available but must be booked 24 hours in advance. Guests are welcome to bring their own picnic baskets, in which case a R50 entrance fee will be applicable. This fee will however be waivered if more than R100 is spent on wine purchases at the estate’s tasting centre. Guests may also bring picnic blankets and chairs, but picnic blankets can also be booked at no cost. A cheese platter for four is offered at R120 and can be ordered on arrival.

Uitkyk’s festive trading hours are Mondays to Fridays from 9:00 to 17:00 and Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 to 16:00.

ALTO AN IDEAL DESTINATION FOR SUMMER SUNDOWNERS

For the third year in a row the Alto wine estate on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain near Somerset West is offering its once-a-week summer sundowners. Known for its stunning views and impressive collection of classically-styled red wines, it’s the perfect venue to enjoy an end-of-day refresher.

At R50 per person, visitors can sip on a refreshing red-wine-infused cocktail and snack on a selection of freshly-baked breads served with pesto, extra virgin olive oil and pâtés while watching the sun set over the vineyards and surrounding mountains.

PUMA enters new yacht into 2011/12 Volvo Ocean Race

Cape Town, South Africa, November 2011 – PUMA Sailing fans can catch all the action of the PUMA Ocean Racing team with the arrival of PUMA’s racing yacht, Mar Mostro (Monster of the Sea), at the V&A Waterfront in November.

Mar Mostro is PUMA’s second entry into the 2011/12 Volvo Ocean Race having placed second in the 2008/9 Volvo Ocean Race.

Cape Town is the first stop-over in this “Mount Everest of sailing,” a 39,000 nautical mile, round-the-world ocean race, stopping in ten ports over the course of nine months.

PUMA’s Mar Mostro is expected to sail into the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town on 25 November. Spectators will be able to view the boat in action in-port on 9 and 10 December and at the race restart on 11 December.

A PUMA pop-up store and entertainment zone called the PUMA Quad will be located opposite the V&A Amphitheatre, to provide the public with limited edition PUMA product for the two-week stopover.

PUMA will host daily activities at the PUMA Quad. Sailing prowess will be tested with grinding competitions taking place between 3pm and 6pm on the 26 November, 1, 3, 8 December as well as between 2pm and 4pm on 10 and 11 December.

The contestant with the best grinding results on competition days will win a R1000 PUMA voucher. Two grand prizes of R10 000 in PUMA vouchers will be awarded to the contestants with the top grinding scores on 10and 11 December.

Daily sundowner Spinnaker Sessions will start on 25 November and will see the likes of local DJs Dino Moran and Craig De Sousa spinning cool tunes at the PUMA Quad from 6.15pm to 9pm and between 7.15pm to 9pm on 10 and 11 December.

In 2010 PUMA hosted a series of parties around the globe to celebrate the after-hours athlete – a person who loves to compete in the lesser known sports (pool, foosball etc) within the social environment. PUMA will continue to celebrate these after-hours sports heroes, this time with a sailing twist, through the PUMA Social Club presents All Hands on Deck party on 9 December from 4pm to 1am at Quay 4, V&A Waterfront.

This is the official Volvo Ocean Race party with live performances by Jack Parow, Craig de Sousa, Holiday Murray, Anthea Scholtz, Them Tornados and The Wedding DJs. Ping pong, darts and bowling are a few of the games that can be played with a drink in your hand on the night. Tickets are limited and will be sold at the door for R50 per person.

The PUMA Ocean Racing team is led by Skipper Ken Read, who has amassed 10 of the most elite off-shore sailors from across the globe, including South African born Jono Swain, to compete in this epic race.

The Volvo Ocean Race begins 5 November 2011 in Alicante, Spain and ends in Galway, Ireland in July 2012. The eight stopovers in between include: Cape Town, Abu Dhabi, Sanya (China), Auckland, Itajaí (Brazil), Miami, Lisbon and Lorient (France).

Delheim picnics daily by the riverside ‘til April 2012

Summer has arrived, the mercury is rising, and attention turns again to the sunny Cape outdoors. Enjoy a gourmet picnic on the lawn at the riverside behind the Delheim cellar (mere meters away from where Bessie the cow drank 20 litres of wine: though we don’t suggest a repeat performance by our visitors!) seven days a week at 12h00, until the end of April 2012. The best score of all is the Delheim wine, sold at cellar door prices to Delheim picnickers, sans a restaurant mark-up.

On the menu this season is smoked salmon; a salad of home-smoked chicken breast with celery, spring onions, homemade pickled pumpkin and pomegranate kernels; a curried lentil salad with mint and peppadews; mascarpone cheese & fig spread; leberwurst pâté; locally-made blue cheese; freshly-cut biltong; homemade dolmades; zwiebelkuchen (German onion pie); beef samoosas; pimento-stuffed olives from Chrisna’s Deli; sun-ripened cocktail tomatoes; freshly-baked farm bread; focaccia and crackers.

Those who still have room for dessert can opt for fresh fruit or something sweeter – koeksisters & Gabriele chocolates (which I’m sure would be Bessie’s choice; but don’t let that dissuade you!) A large bottle of sparkling water is included in the price and a vegetarian option is available on request.

A basket for two is a bargain at R260 (excluding additional beverages), while a basket for four can be had for R520.

A special basket for children under the age of 12, priced at R65, includes a bratwurst hotdog, carrot sticks, raisins, Gouda cheese, crackers, yoghurt, fresh fruit, a chocolate brownie with ice cream, and a fruit juice.

The Santam Swartland wine & Olive route is coming to Kirstenbosch

The Santam Swartland wine & Olive route is coming to Kirstenbosch

It has become fashionable for South Africa’s wine routes to hold festival weekends, but what do you do when you are part of the country’s largest wine district, where the close to 25 members are scattered across an area of over 10 000 square kilometres.

For the Santam Swartland wine &Olive route, which stretches from Malmesbury to Porterville, the answer was clear.

“We decided to take the Swartland to town, so on Saturday October 8, Kirstenbosch Stone Cottages will become an honorary part of the Swartland,” said Jolene Janse van Rensburg, Santam Swartland Wine and Olive Route Manager.

The region’s extraordinary soils, little irrigation and some of the oldest wine stock in the country have produced some exceptional wines, and the winemakers themselves will be in Kirstenbosch to show off their wares.

The 50 or more stalls will include:

The innovative young winemakers behind the Swartland Revolution, (Mullineux, AA Badenhorst);
The affable Danie Malan whose family has been producing remarkable wines at Allesverloren 1872;
Piketberg’s finest – organic wines from the elegant Org De Rac and the top class Cap Classique from Nieuwedrift;
The quality wines from Swartland Winery, the gateway to the Route; and
The new kids on the block: Franki’s Vineyards (featuring vintage cars), Nuweland, Nassau, and many more wines that underline the quality of this route.

The winemakers will be joined by exhibitors selling a large range of products and produce, including jams and preserves, olives, cordials and fresh-baked Swartland breads.

Included in the mix will be some top class potjies and other gastronomic delights for which the Swartland is justly famous.

“We will also be displaying some of the Swartland’s best art and crafts, she said.

The Riebeek children’s steel band, a community project, will provide some of the entertainment on the day, together with other local musicians.

“We want Capetonians to realise that some of the country’s best wines are just around the corner. We are only 78km away, and we are sure that once people realise what we have on offer they will take the short drive up the N7 more often,” Van Rensburg said.
