Spore

Some info:
First thoughts: The Creature creator is both easy to use and provides enough customization tools to create millions of unique little monsters.

Once you stuck in: This is an open ended simulation game where players can create a being that starts off as a few cells and quickly evolves into a galaxy colonizing empire. The game consists of five phases that work like simple mini games that link together. At the cell stage Spore plays out like packman with upgrades but then turns into a platform style game, then a RTS (Real Time Strategy – e.g. Warcraft) and finally a space trading style game with add-ons and extra features. The aim of the game is to survive and evolve; this means living in a world with creatures ranging from friendly little frog like creations, that try to ally and trade their way to dominance, to blood thirsty, trigger happy beasts that won’t hesitate to kill off anything that moves. There are many ways to interact with other creatures throughout evolution ranging from economics and religious propaganda to war. The amazing thing about this is that the entire progression of your creature is altered by the way you act. Meaning if you kill other creatures earlier on in the game more war orientated options and upgrades become available.

Best bit: The wide range of creation tools and options that allow you total freedom over your monsters, buildings and vehicles.

Worst bit: Online play is merely an option to share creations and the game as a whole is a bit simple and easy for experienced gamers.

Summary: Maxis has created another Sims style game that will probably appeal to female and less action orientated gamers. The vast universes and different game play variations make Spore a fun and long lasting game that will have you testing out different ways to play for a few weeks or even months.

Fight Night, Round 3

Some info:
First thoughts: The advertising for this game really lead me to believe that it was going to ‘out weigh’ Round 2. But when I started playing I wasn’t that impressed with it.

Once you stuck in: There are some good new options like having more blood on your victims and more strategic choices (cutting off the ring, bullying, hitting and running, using the jab to control the fight). But the general game play hasn’t improved much. The punches don’t look like they connect, the knockdowns don’t look realistic (they kind float for a couple seconds then drop), the crowd get monotonous, boring and keep shouting the same stuff over & over. There are other cons but each to their own. In this game the cons defiantly shadow the pros but that doesn’t stop it from being an enjoyable game to play.

Best bit: The higher difficulty in landing ‘haymakers’ (this game feels a lot more strategic as a result and more exciting – especially when you almost get knocked out and then reverse the fight with a haymaker of your own)

Worst bit: Your entrance music stays the same throughout and all the boxers do the same intro…

Summary: If you loved FNR1 and FNR2 and are expecting this new version to blow your mitts off, it won’t.

Out of 10: 5 (still fun beating the hell out of your mates)

Fifa Street 2

Some info:
First thoughts: The tricks look impossible to master but are well thought out. There’s really a lot to choose from… After developing the player who will represent you with facial features and clothing, you start playing to build up your points and skills in the street.

Once you stuck in:The game play offers you a variety of choices with your tricks. Each angle directed and button clicked gives another trick. Once you start to memorize your favourites, the game speeds along while still getting tougher. It feels good when you go up against famous players teams and totally whip their asses. Once you have reached a certain level you unlock more variety to the game with creating/ managing your own team, also getting to play more international tournaments and underground games. New players get bought and you have to juggle between them, keeping everyone happy.

The game is very ‘in your face and quick’. It’s not built for the Fifa fans that are looking for a game of football. Its all centred around the tricks and building up your gamebreaker points.

Best bit: Trick combos

Worst bit: Once again the characters are repeated to often. When you are playing new teams, there are characters who look exactly the same as some of the teams you have played before.

Summary: Great for the football fan or trick enthusiast.

The Godfather

Some info:
First thoughts: Starts off well with pieces of the classic story. You design the guy who will represent you (as in most role play games these days) and then move on through the story covering family, respect, and loyalty.

Once you stuck in: When I first picked up the control to play, I played for a 10 & a half session. It’s addictive! You negotiate your way through the 5 burrows of New York with mob hits, bank heists to drive-bys and extortion. You start off at the bottom of the food chain and work you way up through the ranks by extorting local businesses and doing tasks for the bosses. The game is pretty violent as you get to kill rivals in various fashions with a different execution styles for each weapons you carry. It’s amazing to actually be involved with each major activity just as it unfolds on the movie. Like you can be doing your normal hustling activities and then be called in at anytime for a mission. If you analysis the movie you will notice that in each scene there is a mission being preformed by a nameless person. In the game, that’s you…For example, you’re the one that has to sneak into the toilets of the restaurant to plant the gun for Michael Corleone. As you get more respect and grow in the family, your missions get harder (obviously) but still stay very relevant to the movie.

Best bit: Being involved with the legacy of Godfather. You get to be part of a classic movie & time in America’s rich history.

Worst bit: Some of the venues you go into are repeated. Not sure if that is just so you will be able to find our way around and are familiar with the place but it does get a little monotonous then.

Summary: Great all round game to keep you entertained for hours, if not days.

Need for speed: Most wanted

Need for speed: Most wanted

Some info:
First thoughts: It’s great fun customizing your car.

Once you stuck in: This game is fun, fast and very explosive. Firstly, the game play is good because there are a lot of cars to choose from. These cars are ‘dam’ fast. Also, when you play the milestone portion, there are many laws to violate. For example, hitting the police cars hard, driving the wrong way, ‘hit and runs’ & resisting arrest. You have to get to the serious stuff happen to get more bounty. There’s more heat, longer time, more bounty as well as with the regular race portion, there’s good steering when you drive. However, you have to win every race to make it count. Once you win enough races, milestones and bounties, you can go to challenge the blacklist opponent. So, for the game play overall, it is perfect. The soundtrack is very good, although, some songs I’ve heard before in other EA games. If you have other EA games, you know what I am talking about. The visuals are awesome. The car crashing visual is really cool. The glass will be truly broken and I will trade the paint. Overall, an awesome and explosive game, it is one of the “must-buy games” for 2005.

Best bit: The realistic effects drom the way you drive. You can almost feel the tires grip the road and it can get a little hectic when you slip across the road.

Worst bit: Music from other games in the sound track

Summary: You wont be disappointed when you get it, just remember those eye drops.

Game: SSX On Tour

First thoughts: Can’t quite sort out the right configuration. But the racing is solid!

Once you stuck in: Once you sort out the tricks and jumps, it gets better. The combos get trickier but easier to manage. Once you have your ‘hype’ up the tricks get more intense and original

Best bit: Rail-sliding combos

Worst bit: Not as many tricks as the Tony Hawk series which brings down expectations

Summary: A quick downhill race against your mates

Game: Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects

First thoughts: Game play is easy to master and its quick to cruise through the stages.

Once you stuck in: Some of the stages are basic and extremely easy to finish quickly but then you will reach a stage that frustrates you so much that you have to stop playing. The multi player option is great to battle it off as your favourite marvel character.

Best bit: The stories you unlock as you finish stages. You get to know the past of your favourite the characters.

Worst bit: When you cant get past a certain spot, which almost turns you off the game. The camera mechanics are great and the repeated scenes shouldn’t be there.

Summary: Great idea but more thought could have been put into the originality of the stages, moves and quests.

Game: Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2006

First thoughts: The controls are similar to the predecessors and might be a little tricky to get used to for first time players.

Once you stuck in: Controls are better than 04 and 05, and the game is pretty captivating for a sports game with nice progression and a sense of accomplishment as you go through the tour.

Best bit: Great graphics and awesome sceneries, funny player outfits!

Worst bit: Game is a little resource intensive so make sure you have the hardware (graphics card) to run it to make it as enjoyable as possible.

Summary: Great Graphics, best golf game I’ve played in since the old Links regime, realistic play. I recommend you get yourself a rumble pad for your pc, (cordless of course) hook this game up to a large monitor/TV/Projector and get your friends round for a game of all weather golfing on the couch. EA has kept sporting games alive with titles like this, the cricket and my fav the rugby.

Out of 10: I’d be happy to give Tiger Woods PGA Tour ’06 a 7

Burnout Revenge

Some info:
Game: Burnout Revenge

First thoughts: A lot of groans were heard around the room when I switched it on! But as we started playing, we quickly found out that the main focus of the game was to crash into cars or be crash.

Once you stuck in: Once you get over the thrill of crashing into others, you soon master the skills of special ‘takedowns’. There are also various signature moves which bring up your rating levels. All sorts of slick & stylish cars get given to you as you progress through the stages.
The various levels are also quite detailed and noticing the fine details is not so difficult when you speed past.

Road rage becomes your route to survival…

Best bit: Once you force another diver to crash, the game play pauses and you see in slow motion your move from great angles.

Worst bit: Crashing from another racer without even smelling them.

Summary: It’s a great twist in the usual ‘race and don’t crash’ games.

Medal of Honor: European Assault

Some info:
First thoughts: The latest in the ‘Medal of Honor’ series, gives you the chance to get back at the Nazi’s in WW2. You get to travel across Europe on many campaigns, stopping the evil-doers in their tracks. There is also a team who missions around with you to help kill all the bad guys.

Once you stuck in: Get your aim right and you’ll cruise through the stages. The scenes are based on happenings from WW2 so there are lots to see and lots going on throughout Europe, North Africa and Russia. This will defiantly keep you entertained for hours, as you lead soldiers through important assignments.
A nice feature is when you run into a warehouse and 5/6 guys run in on your left and right shooting to help out. It leaves you with that warm, fuzzy feeling in your stomach.
It time for you to turn the tide of the war, be on the winning side!

Best bit: Using the sniper rifle to shoot the enemy sniper from miles away.

Worst bit: Running out of ammo with a clear shot. Then getting shot to pieces.

Summary: It’s a fun all round game. Also got to learn a little bit more about the World War that I missed.

EA Sports, Cricket 2005

EA Sports, Cricket 2005

Some info:
First thoughts: The game might seem a bit annoying in the beginning as when you start batting you will go out easily or when you are bowling you will get smacked around a lot. But stick out this frustrating time, spend a half and hour or so in the nets training and you will be on your way.

Once you stuck in: Once you have ironed out some of the tough edges in your game through a bit of training, the cricket lover will be hooked. As you get the feel for the timing of your shots when batting you will find that the game play is excellent and very accurate to life. It is a bit too easy to hit sixes but be warned if your timing is off you will be out. Bowling is really for the cricket lover, if you don’t like to bowl there is a autoplay feature which allows the computer to bowl an entire game for you in a matter of seconds.

I personally like bowling, it is a tactical aspect of the game which appeals to me. Trying to work a batsmen out is a half the fun. You can custom set your field allowing you to bowl to a certain strategy hopefully resulting in many wickets for a minimum of runs.

Best bit: Finally getting your timing right with the big shots. Its fun!! Smack a few gorgeous shots through the covers, any cricket enthusiast will be delighted.

Worst bit: Learning to bat and bowl. It is frustrating!!

Summary: It the best cricket game out there. It is the most true to life. The closest you get to playing a real game of cricket in front of a screen.
