The Tygerberg Children’s Choir’s annual Christmas Concerts are the perfect way to get into the Christmas spirit.

It’s time again for the highly acclaimed Tygerberg Children’s Choir’s very popular annual Christmas concerts. The choir celebrates its 39th year, and was crowned world champions in two categories at the 6th World Choir Games in Shaoxing, China during July last year. This major achievement catapulted the choir to the number 4 over-all position on the official Musica Mundi world ranking list for competition choirs.

The choir has, as usual, compiled a varied programme which will appeal to young and old. This year’s concert is entitled ‘Peace on Earth/Vrede op Aarde’ and promises once again to be a spectacle of sound and light. Favourites such as Agnus Dei, O Holy Night, the Gounod Ave Maria, Santa Claus is Comin’ To Town, O Come All Ye Faithful and Es ist ein Ros Entsprungen can be heard. The concerts will also feature the superb vocal group The Voice of Angels, all members of Tygerberg Children’s Choir. Contributors: Madri Gerber (violin) Annatjie Brand (Organ) Karina Erasmus (double bass) and Charl van Heyningen (narrator).

The choir has been under the baton of internationally respected conductor Hendrik D. Loock since its inception, with Theresa Loock as accompanist and arranger.

The concerts will take place in the Endler Hall, University of Stellenbosch, on the following dates and times:

Sunday 20 November at 15h00

Sunday 27 November at 15h00

Sunday 4 December at 15h00

Sunday 11 December at 15h00

There will be an additional concert in the Cape Town City Hall on Saturday 3 December at 20h00.

Tickets cost R90pp (R70 for students and scholars)

Bookings: Computicket

The choir’s new Christmas DVD will also be available at the performances.

The choir will celebrate its 40-year reunion from 7-9 December 2012, and all ex-choristers and interested parties are requested to contact the choir as early as possible at info@tcc.co.za. The reunion promises to be a very special one indeed!

Delheim PicnicsSummer has arrived, the mercury is rising, and attention turns again to the sunny Cape outdoors. Enjoy a gourmet picnic on the lawn at the riverside behind the Delheim cellar (mere meters away from where Bessie the cow drank 20 litres of wine: though we don’t suggest a repeat performance by our visitors!) seven days a week at 12h00, until the end of April 2012. The best score of all is the Delheim wine, sold at cellar door prices to Delheim picnickers, sans a restaurant mark-up.

On the menu this season is smoked salmon; a salad of home-smoked chicken breast with celery, spring onions, homemade pickled pumpkin and pomegranate kernels; a curried lentil salad with mint and peppadews; mascarpone cheese & fig spread; leberwurst pâté; locally-made blue cheese; freshly-cut biltong; homemade dolmades; zwiebelkuchen (German onion pie); beef samoosas; pimento-stuffed olives from Chrisna’s Deli; sun-ripened cocktail tomatoes; freshly-baked farm bread; focaccia and crackers.

Those who still have room for dessert can opt for fresh fruit or something sweeter – koeksisters & Gabriele chocolates (which I’m sure would be Bessie’s choice; but don’t let that dissuade you!) A large bottle of sparkling water is included in the price and a vegetarian option is available on request.

A basket for two is a bargain at R260 (excluding additional beverages), while a basket for four can be had for R520.

A special basket for children under the age of 12, priced at R65, includes a bratwurst hotdog, carrot sticks, raisins, Gouda cheese, crackers, yoghurt, fresh fruit, a chocolate brownie with ice cream, and a fruit juice.

Best of all, if you bounce out of bed to discover a sunny day, let us know before 10h30 and your basket can still be prepared. Contact the restaurant team at restaurant@delheim.com or telephone (021) 888-4607.

The Santam Swartland wine & Olive route is coming to Kirstenbosch

It has become fashionable for South Africa’s wine routes to hold festival weekends, but what do you do when you are part of the country’s largest wine district, where the close to 25 members are scattered across an area of over 10 000 square kilometres.

For the Santam Swartland wine &Olive route, which stretches from Malmesbury to Porterville, the answer was clear.

“We decided to take the Swartland to town, so on Saturday October 8, Kirstenbosch Stone Cottages will become an honorary part of the Swartland,” said Jolene Janse van Rensburg, Santam Swartland Wine and Olive Route Manager.

The region’s extraordinary soils, little irrigation and some of the oldest wine stock in the country have produced some exceptional wines, and the winemakers themselves will be in Kirstenbosch to show off their wares.

The 50 or more stalls will include:

  • The innovative young winemakers behind the Swartland Revolution, (Mullineux, AA Badenhorst);
  • The affable Danie Malan whose family has been producing remarkable wines at Allesverloren 1872;
  • Piketberg’s finest – organic wines from the elegant Org De Rac and the top class Cap Classique from Nieuwedrift;
  • The quality wines from Swartland Winery, the gateway to the Route; and
  • The new kids on the block: Franki’s Vineyards (featuring vintage cars), Nuweland, Nassau, and many more wines that underline the quality of this route.

The winemakers will be joined by exhibitors selling a large range of products and produce, including jams and preserves, olives, cordials and fresh-baked Swartland breads.

Included in the mix will be some top class potjies and other gastronomic delights for which the Swartland is justly famous.

“We will also be displaying some of the Swartland’s best art and crafts, she said.

The Riebeek children’s steel band, a community project, will provide some of the entertainment on the day, together with other local musicians.

“We want Capetonians to realise that some of the country’s best wines are just around the corner. We are only 78km away, and we are sure that once people realise what we have on offer they will take the short drive up the N7 more often,” Van Rensburg said.

OysterAn authentic township and shebeen experience has been added to the 2011 Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival programme.

For the first time in the festival’s 28 year history festival-goers will be able to experience everyday life in a township with the introduction of The Shebeen Experience. Running from 2 -9 July The Shebeen Experience offers people the opportunity to experience the music, community life and cultures of people living in a township.

Held at Club 702 in White Location over-looking the Knysna Heads, visitors can taste local cuisine while listening to local music. A battle of the DJs will also run throughout the festival.

“The Shebeen Experience is particularly for those who have never had the experience of being in such an environment as well as at the same time bringing the Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival closer to the community,” said Nkoli Didi, organizer of The Shebeen Experience.

Already the largest oyster festival in Africa, the Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival which takes place from 1 – 10 July will see over 65 000 visitors flocking to the small Garden Route town and over 200 000 oysters being consumed.

Another first on the festival program is the Stand Up Paddle for surfers (SUP) which takes place on the Knysna Lagoon on July 6. Here surfers standing on their boards with paddles compete against canoeists in 6km race across the lagoon.

The Hansa Waterfront Rush is back on the programme this year thanks to new sponsorship. The Rush is a race against the clock over an obstacle course setup on or above water at the Knysna Waterfront. It takes the average participant 12 minutes to complete the course and each entrant gets two chances to post a time during the first 2 days of the event.  The participants with the fastest 8 times go through to the knockout final rounds on the Sunday.

A four day rugby festival is also new to the programme. This includes a tag rugby tournament for schools in the Western Cape, an Under 13’s Rugby Coaching Clinic for local school children with the SWD Eagles and the Steri Stumpie / KURFC Oyster Development Cup 15-a-side tournament.

With over 100 events to choose from there is something for everyone at this year’s festival including township tours, the Pick n Pay Oyster Festival Soccer Tournament, the SA Dog Agility Championships, the Athletics SWD & Knysna Marathon Club Relays, a Boccia Tournament for the disabled, the Precision Drill Display by Sea Cadets of TS, the Oyster Rapid Chess Tournament, the Hornlee Oyster Festival Fun Run/Walk (5km) and the Knysna Classic Golf Day to name a few. So choose your activity, get training, pack up the family and book to be part of SA’s winter holiday destination of choice to make sure you don’t miss out. For further information visit www.oysterfestival.co.za or call Knysna Tourism on 044 382 5510.
