This August, Glenmorangie invites whisky enthusiasts to join their renowned Global Brand Ambassador, Karen Fullerton, for an exclusive luxury dining experience in partnership with Saxon Hotel, Villas & Spa. Karen will opening for tasting the one of only two bottles of Glenmorangie 1963 on the African continent.

The luxury dining experience will take whisky enthusiasts and seekers of luxury on a journey of discovery where each whisky is paired to precision to enhance the nuances of the whisky notes.

Under the guidance of Karen’s mentor, Dr Bill Lumsden,Glenmorangie’s Director of Distilling and Whisky Creation, she has become an expert in sensory analysis and the intricacies of whisky production. Her decade long research into Scotch Whisky and its delicate sensory nuances has led Karen to travelling the world, helping to demystify the complex and intriguing world of Single Malt Scotch Whisky.

Karen’s trip signals the celebration around a very unique discovery. Fifty bottles of limited edition Glenmorangie 1963 whisky were recently found tucked away in a forgotten corner of one of Glenmorangie’s Highland warehouses. Glenmorangie 1963 is set to excite connoisseurs and collectors alike.

Glenmorangie 1963 is the world’s first wood-finished Scotch whisky, a forerunner in the field of extra-maturation and the precursor to the brands current extra-matured range of whiskies. Distilled in 1963, this exceptional malt was matured in ex bourbon oak casks for 22 years before finishing its journey in the finest Spanish Oloroso sherry casks, resulting in a single malt whisky that is nothing short of ground-breaking , going on to become the first ever commercially released extra matured ( or wood finished) whisky.

Dr Bill Lumsden, has carefully inspected the pioneering spirit, affirming that its rich and sumptuous flavours have been retained. It has now been decanted into commemorative new bottles reminiscent of those used in the 1960s, with luxury “time capsule” style packaging. Each of the bottles is engraved with a unique number and is presented in a metal “time capsule”-style box. The box has a polished oak wood interior, and contains a luxurious booklet customised with a hand-signed note of authenticity from Dr Bill Lumsden. The labels, collar and cork are made of the purest .925 solid silver and only one of these celebrated bottles will be opened for tasting at this prestigious event.

As the year comes to a close . . . → Read More Here: STOR-AGE CREATE HAPPINESS CAMPAIGN]]>

As the year comes to a close it is time, once again, for the Stor-Age Create Happiness drive to kick into gear and South Africans are encouraged to donate their unwanted goods to their nearest Stor-Age store for charities in need!

The annual campaign encourages people to drop off items that they do not use at home such as any unwanted books, clothes, toys and non-perishable items at their nearest Stor-Age store where they are safely stored. These are then distributed to various charities in need across the country by the organisation The Round Table.

A massive 100m² of goods were collected at Stor-Age stores in the 2012 Create Happiness Drive which were donated to organisations such as the Maranatha Care Centre in Pretoria, which was devastated by a fire earlier this year, and to Sister Betty Glover, an 83 year old ordained minister who runs a soup kitchen and chapel from her home in Noordgesig in Soweto.

Stor-Age hopes to surpass the amount of goods collected last year and is confident they can reach at least 150m² of goods with the help of the public.

“We are immensely proud of the Create Happiness drive and how it has grown over the years”, said Chris Oosthuizen, National Marketing Manager at Stor-Age. “It is a passion project of ours and one that offers us the opportunity to give back to our community. There is no donation too small, and it goes a long way to creating some happiness in the lives of those less fortunate than us.”

Those who donate goods also stand a chance at winning some extra storage space. Post a picture of yourself dropping off goods at your nearest Stor-Age store on the Twitter Page @stor_age or Facebook wall – www.facebook.com/storagesa and you might be chosen!

On Sunday, 25 November, over 2,000 motorbikes roared up the driveway of GrandWest in support of the annual Toy Run.

The bikes were festooned with a kaleidoscope of stuffed toys in every conceivable colour, shape and form. The toys were put in storage, where they have been counted and wrapped. On Monday, 2 December the toys will be delivered to over 200 homes for orphans and destitute children throughout the Western Cape, all in time for Christmas.

GrandWest staff donated a further 224 toys, GrandWest donated 100 Kids Fun Packs and the Engineering Department outdid themselves by building a doll house. Speaking about their contribution, Rodney January, Clive Cupido and Theo Prins said they got some guidance from their manager, Johan Gelderblom and other Engineering staff members. “It became a fun thing in our department. Maybe next year, we can build a boat or even a replica of the waterfront,” Clive said laughingly.

Mike Clark from the Toy Run Charity Trust said “we are grateful to all the staff of GrandWest for their support and generosity in personally donating additional toys. The demand for toys always outstrips supply and every toy will be put to good use. “

The annual event was started by the Italian Motorcycle Club 31 years ago with the express purpose of collecting toys for the Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Rondebosch. The inaugural event drew 34 bikers who donated 72 toys and this year, estimations are that as many as 37,000 toys will have been donated.

Mervyn Gers, the Cape Town potter whose work is being lauded worldwide is opening a retail shop and exhibition space in the City Centre.

It couldn’t be more perfect as this area is known for its art and antique shops. The building itself is over 100 years old and very beautiful both inside and out.

Another advantage is the fact that the shop is right in the middle of Cape Town’s ‘Art Walk’. On the first Thursday of every month, Cape Town’s central city comes alive as dozens of art galleries and stores are open until 9pm. And the next Art Walk if on December 5 – two days after the Mervyn Gers Ceramics shop is launched.

Unique range and free parking ups the ante

On Thursday morning 28 November 2013, Pick n Pay opened its doors for business at its new location at the V&A Waterfront, revealing a space that firmly establishes it as the most innovative and forward-thinking South African retailer.

According to Peter Arnold, Pick n Pay’s Merchandise Director, the store is so much more than simply a supermarket – it’s an experience: “What makes this store particularly unique is the fact that it will be run entirely by people who are passionate about food: Pastry chefs, sushi chefs and bakers – even the assistant chefs behind the scenes prepping the salads – have been selected for their love of food,” said Peter Arnold, Pick n Pay’s Merchandise Director.

“There are 12 professional chefs in-store to advise customers on everything from the best cut of meat, to the best way to poach salmon; and qualified sommeliers are on standby to provide advice on the vast selection of wine available. It will make every difference to the food shopping experience and we are very excited about what we have created for our customers.”

On entering the store, shoppers are greeted by an abundance of fresh flowers and orchids, the delicious aroma of Bean There coffee and the vision of gelato so beautifully presented it looks almost too good to eat!

And so begins the journey into the store that is guaranteed to revolutionise the food shopping experience: magnificent artisanal breads and cakes – a hot and cold deli offering the likes of which Cape Town has never seen; and a range of deli meats and cheeses that makes the store a foodie’s paradise.

Six highly skilled sushi chefs stand ready at the beautifully designed sushi bar to serve Pick n Pay’s famous sushi, and exclusive to the store is the highest quality free-range duck, as well as duck and quail eggs.

Coffee lovers will be thrilled by the extended range of coffees, some of which include Origin, Tribe, Caffe Vergano and Lucaffe; and our tea selection is just as impressive with brands such as Toni Glass, Pukka and Creativi-tea. Look out for the tasting area where you can sample some of the delicious coffees and teas on offer.

Fresh produce presents a superb variety too with and exclusive range of growing micro-herbs that are great for salads; an assortment of exotic mushrooms and an extended organic range. In our butchery you’ll find 21-day aged beef for extra-succulent eating and the Japanese delicacy, Kobe-styled beef among a host of other options.

Our fresh Norwegian and Scottish Salmon is a highlight in our Seafood department, where you’ll also find sustainably farmed kabeljou, frozen orange crab and our exclusive new Arctic Frost range.

With 800 wine lines from 200 brands and over 150 wine estates, it’s fair to say there’s something for everyone in local wine selection – and there’s also a slightly smaller selection of international of wines, the very best 100 local sparkling, MCC and French Champagnes. For all you other liquor requirements a PnP Liquor Store is located right next door.

For the latest fashion look out for the PnP Clothing section and in the health and beauty section you’ll find brands such as Rimmel London, L’Oreal, Maybelline, Revlon, Garnier and Almay. In addition, a lovely selection of glassware, cookware, accessories, and cookbooks has been selected with great care especially for this store.

Arnold says that convenience was an enormous factor when it came to designing the store and the fact that Pick n Pay is able to offer its customers on-grade parking, free of charge for 90 minutes is a significant factor. “Parking is a at a huge premium in Cape Town and we are truly delighted to be able to offer our customers the benefit of safe, free parking within a couple of meters from our store.”

To qualify for free parking, shoppers need to spend R150 at the store.

Smile 90.4FM’s love doctor Mehboob Bawa is currently starring in the new Moir’s advertisement, which is being flighted on television stations across South Africa.

Says presenter Bawa: “What makes this ad so exciting and unique, is that it showcases various characters interacting with gigantic Moir’s biscuits, showing how each of the small packs contain the goodness of a larger biscuit.

“I thoroughly enjoyed making the advertisement. The atmosphere on set was wonderful. The director, award winning Lourens van Rensburg, was also great. He gave the actors a lot of room to improvise after he had shot the set ups he had planned. I had no dialogue originally and he liked some of the lines I ad-libbed, so he kept some of it in the ad. The final scenes selected were part of the improvised scenes. The director had briefed the actress, but left me in the dark. I had an idea what they were doing – a big set up with all hell breaking loose. That was lucky for me, as I would have probably been completely bowled over when she hit me with the huge biscuit. What you don’t see in the ad is that I’m still holding the cup and drinking my tea as a good tea lover would, even after everything else went sprawling around me.”

The advertisement was shot in the beautiful location of Rondebosch Boys High in only one day. Bawa, who has been acting professionally since 1989, also acted in numerous award winning advertisements, with one winning an international award.

Besides entertaining us on TV screens, the multi-talented actor and radio presenter believes in paying it forward and inspiring others through an initiative called ‘Journey to Greatness’. Together with the J2G team, he will be hosting a free event at Groote Schuur on the 8th November 2013 introducing the initiative showing people how to overcome their challenges and live their best life by creating a positive mind set.

Says Bawa: “I love the film industry, so I line produce and co-ordinate the logistics for film productions that shoot in Cape Town and the rest of South Africa, primarily from Bollywood. I also write articles on Bollywood for The Cape Times, produce radio adverts, do voice-overs and am working on producing my own feature films and TV series with local and international partners. Having just read this myself, I wonder where I find the time.” Find out more on www.mehboobbawa.com

Ex-Springbok captain flies the flag for the Overstrand region

With a love for the great outdoors, there’s no place quite like the Overstrand region for Bob Skinstad to spend time with his family.

The retired Springbok rugby player has been appointed tourism ambassador for the area, which encompasses Gansbaai, Hangklip-Kleinmond, Hermanus and Stanford in an effort by Wesgro, the Western Cape’s official tourism, trade and investment agency, and Overstrand Municipality’s Tourism Department to drive tourism in a region which has many inviting attractions.

“Wesgro has played an intermediary role between the Overstrand region and Bob, bringing together the two parties with the objective of leveraging Bob’s celebrity status and large network of social media followers to drive awareness of the region,” said Nils Flaatten, Wesgro CEO. “It is our intention to learn from this agreement and then replicate it in other areas to benefit tourism.”

Solomzi Madikane, Overstrand Municipality: Director of Local Economic Development and Tourism, said the Tourism Ambassador Programme would play an important role in increasing and building a positive brand including the overall destination image of the Cape Whale Coast.”

“Bob will be introduced and exposed to some of the Overstrand’s local events and festivals and partaking in a variety of activities, giving him the opportunity to spread the word about this beautiful destination at local and international platforms. We feel proud to be the first region in the Western Cape to have its very own Tourism Ambassador,” Madikane added.

Bob has a close affinity to the region and is excited to take up his role as ambassador, “both my parents and my in-laws live in Hermanus so my family and I spend many happy weekends enjoying all this area has to offer,” Skinstad said at the launch event at the Cape Royale, announcing his involvement.

“My son and I also enjoy playing cricket on the beach in Hermanus, while my daughters swim with me or walk on the cliff path with my wife and I,” Skinstad said.

Today a businessman and rugby commentator, Skinstad is still keenly involved with many sporting pursuits including playing golf, cricket, surfing and cycling – all of which the Overstrand region caters to.

Nils Flaatten, CEO of Wesgro, said that Skinstad’s stature would assist in the marketing of the Overstrand region. “Bob will be experiencing all the Overberg has to offer, from shark cage diving to whale watching, wine tasting and horse riding and be able to promote these activities from a personal perspective,” Flaatten said. “It will also be fantastic to have someone who is as well-known as he is, attending events such as the Hermanus Whale Festival or the Blues Music Festival in Kleinmond.”

In keeping with tradition, Skinstad will take part in the Stanford Boxing Day Cricket Festival as he does every year, “hopefully this year the added incentive of being the Ambassador of the region will bring me luck with bat and ball in hand,” added Skinstad.

What started out as a ‘man cave’ has evolved into a business opportunity for two passionate motorbike enthusiasts and now they have been recognized for dreaming big by beer brand Hansa Pilsener.

Ruan Vermeulen and Robert Nicholls, both creative directors at advertising agencies by day, spent a two-week adventure in the Karoo on their bikes. They soon realised that neither of their motorbikes were built for the terrain. “Special custom made bikes were required – so we decided to build them. Here the dream was realised and a business opportunity grew,” said Ruan.

They travel to weird and wonderful places to source bikes, and order specialty parts from overseas. “The market is not massive as most customers who can afford it, will simply purchase a Harley Davidson, but I think people are catching on to the beauty of custom, hand-made and tailored bikes, says Robert.

Both agree that they have stumbled a fair bit during the process and realise they have a lot to learn about the actual mechanics of bikes. “We were all about the aesthetics and soon realised that a knowledgeable person was required full time to work out the mechanical kinks.”

Fury Custom Bikes will star along with Hansa’s original big dreamer, Vuyo, in their own TV advert, sponsored by Hansa.

What stood out for Hansa General Manager Khensani Nobanda about the pair was their dream to live a free life – building and riding their bikes across South Africa’s beautiful open spaces. “Giving them the opportunity to broaden their audience and assist them in achieving their big dream with a TV advert is what we are all about. Being able to celebrate these entrepreneurs through the Hansa Cheers to the Dreamers campaign goes a long way in bridging the gap between their small ideas and their ultimate big dream,” she said.

“Shooting the footage for the advert was huge fun and really gave us the insight into what we are actually achieving and how far we’ve come,” Ruan said. They both agreed that meeting Vuyo was “classic – he is such a legend and a really cool dude – that was a real highlight for us”.

“At the moment this is just a side-line business as we both still work, but the big dream is go into the business of creating custom made bikes for our customers full-time,” said Ruan.

Watch this space – the pair hopes to diversify their business within the next five years by selling merchandise and perhaps adding a small coffee shop.
