Koula’s Campus Classics

Red for Life, CD4 : Various Artists

Some info:
This CD was produced my Theo Crous for Levi’s Red for Life campaign. Red for Life focuses especially on the Youth to raise awareness around HIV and Aids. Together with Sony and Treatment Action Campaign (TAC), Levi’s has launched this CD titled CD4 to raise funds for their cause. It is a great South African compilation with tracks from every popular music genre in South Africa. The artists range from groups such as Mafikizolo to Fokofpolisiekar, Springbok Nude Girls, Louise Varver and Prime Circle. It is a genuine representation of the diversity South African music making for some good cross cultural listening.

For anyone looking for some great tunes (many tracks being huge SA hits), with something local but of international standard, this CD is it. The overall vibe of is relatively chilled and relaxing. Not all the tracks are for everyone but there is something for most. A great overall record with heaps of quality South African music!

Some info:
Oh no! not another compilation! was my immediate reaction to ‘Koula’s Campus Classics’. Yet upon listening to it my mind was put at ease that not all compilation albums hold the same cheesy songs that any self-proclaimed music connoisseur would abhor. Starting off with Blink 182’s Down, the album moves from contemporary rock/punk classics all the way to the poignant Mad World by Gary Jules. There are even some local artists such as the controversial Fokofpolisiekar with Hemel op Die Platteland, which as you may have gathered is Afrikaans – an unusual addition to a compilation of mostly pop-rock.

Overall the album makes for some good listening and has a South African feel about it that, as the title states, will definitely be a campus classic.
