Day 1 - The Rocky
Mountain Trail.
The day starts off with the tour-guide giving
basic 4x4 principles and instructions to the drivers
and then having them complete a few exercises,
making sure they know enough to get them through
the trail ahead. |
The orientation exercises
take you up and down a series of hills and steep
decents and even a small mud pool - to give your
vehicle that rough-&-ready look with the designer
mud! ... depending on whether you "gun-it"
through the puddle or not. |
|
|
Drive down... or roll down!
Part of the orientation. |
On the trail there are many
awesome views of the mountainous terrain and surroundings.
The group gets to stop and enjoy views and a chat
throughout the trail. Much fun is had by aspiring
DJ's having a go at each other on the two-way
radios that get handed out before the trail starts.
Alternately, one can listen to the guide by tuning
your radio to his private channel - stufftodo
hint; pack a few of your favourite CD's. |

|
Yep, another view, the drop off the side of the
mountain was a bit hectic so we decided to stay
in the 4x4 for this pic. |
The trail was "hand" made by the owner
- Oom Nickel who has dedicated serious time and
energy to get this resort the way it is. Even
the slightest wheelspin on the rocky mountain
trail is frowned upon. Nature and trail conservation
plays a huge part here so that everyone and their
kiddies will be able to enjoy the reserve in future.
Photographs do not reflect true inclination, but
trust us, this is a sweet 25° - 30° climb
up the side of a hill named "Bloed Sweet".

|
Down the mountain and through
some river streams to add character to your 4x4's
paint job. Will the last car please just pick
up everyone else's number plates - thanks. |
The two ways of camping...
1. Styling - Bring along all
your toys and accessories that you bought at the
last outdoor exhibition show. From pump-up eco-friendly
gas burners and super-compact-waterless-stainless-steel
cookware to make slightly spicy chicken fajitas
cooked in peanut-oil with a side salad and a nachos
starter ... |
|
|
or
2. Rough it - bring the
bare essentials - wood, matches , beat-up kettle
(sponge all the other stuff) and make it work for
you. |
Day 2 - The Sand Trail.
This day is for the MCD - More Core Division-wheelspins
allowed of course. The trail takes you up and
down a series of steep sandy dune-paths and is
great fun to test your skills. Don't get too excited
if you conquered your first little sand hill and
then go charging over the side of the "road"
like this unfortunate individual. |
|
|
Lots of reversing and trying
different gear selections and techniques to get
you up the hills. - stufftodo hint; make friends
with the guy with the biggest 4x4 early on. |
... of course no one goes home till everyone
makes it through, recoveries are the order of
the day and 'naturally' done by everyone involved,
you soon know who your friends are here! Chance
for the pro's to show their stuff (and fancy
4x4 gear) and help out a little.
