Event Details
The Red Bull Cape Town Man is a multi-disciplined extreme relay race that is set to take place in and around the city of Cape Town in mid-November 2005. The race will incorporate: Speed Kitesurfing, Adventure Biking, Mountain Running and Speed Paragliding. The race will be made up of 70 x 4-man teams who will compete against each other over a pre-defined course that covers the natural and manmade elements of the city. The course has been designed to challenge the teams' physical and mental abilities.
The demanding course will take the teams through a variety of challenging natural and manmade landmarks. The athletes will start off at sea level and will race to well over 1000m above sea level to the highest point in the city, before returning to the Atlantic Ocean in an attempt to take the inaugural event title.
South Africa 's Mother City , Cape Town , situated at the tip of Africa , is blessed with immense natural and rugged beauty. Nestled below the imposing granite relief of Table Mountain , the city is flanked by miles of beautiful beaches, natural land and oceanic reserves, and a number of national and internationally renowned hertiage sites.
The city's typography rises from sea level to over 1000m in under 5kms!! Making Cape Town the perfect location to host a relay race that incorpoates the city's natural elements; sea land and air. The course has been designed to ensure each leg of the race incorporates one of the city's renowned sites.
-Kitesurfers will attempt to sail around Robben Island , the notorious prison that housed Nelson Mandela during his 27 years of incarceration.
-Adventure bikers will pass through the country's oldest building, The Cape Castle, (fortress that has never fired a shot in anger)as they tackle the immense gradient as they make their way towards the mountain.
-Mountain Runners will literally attempt to run up the face of Table Mountain, tackling the almost impossible incline, as they scrabble to the top and then cross the table towards their last team member
-Paragliders will launch off Table Mountain, fly to the adjacent Signal Hill for a "touch and go" and relaunch as they head down towards the famous Camps Bay area to the finish line.
The geography and beauty of the city truly offers some spectacular terrain to host an event of this nature. The combination of the natural and manmade elements, and the selected sporting disciplines are sure to test the stamina and will of the athletes as they race against the picturesque background of the fairest Cape !
