Count down to the final

August 2006 - Golfing and long driving enthusiasts from around the country as well as international guests and participants have been watching in amazement the much anticipated annual 2006 RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship presented by First National Bank, in particular the unbelievable distances our local Long Hitters have been achieving. 

The 2006 Championship began in Gauteng at the NuGolf Golf Practice Centre on Friday 5 May; and has since traveled across South Africa and will ultimately end up back at the NuGolf Golf Practice Centre for the Semi-Final and Final on Saturday 26th August. 

The prize money for the open division winner is R50, 000, ladies division winner has a R20, 000 reward, over and above these generous prizes both of the winners from the South African World Championship are granted entrance to compete in the RE/MAX World Long Drive Finals in Mesquite, Nevada which holds a record breaking total purse of $500, 000.  The World Long Drive Finals start with the Ladies Qualifying on Tuesday 24 October and ends on Saturday 28 October 2006.

“This event has been growing from strength to strength each year since the inaugural RE/MAX Long Drive Championship in South Africa in 1998.  The international following, especially in the USA, is massive and the enthusiasm has definitely taken on a local flavour in recent years”, said Gary Nichols, Senior Franchise Manager for RE/MAX of Southern Africa.
