Feature Article - DISCOVER YOUR ROOTS WITH THE SURVIVAL ADVENTURE RACE
The historic town of Stellenbosch will turn into a survival camp and become a hive of activity when the Survival Adventure Race makes its debut on Saturday, 17 and Sunday, 18 February 2007. The inaugural race is predicted to be the ultimate test of endurance as contestants pitch their skills against that of Mother Nature.
Teams consisting of between two and twenty members will tackle the Survival Adventure race, which will see competitors enduring the unforgiving elements as they navigate the mountains of Stellenbosch. The race will challenge teams in various disciplines with tasks being either physically or mentally challenging, while consistently testing participants’ problem-solving capabilities. Kicking off in Church Street at 10h00 on Saturday, 17 February 2007, entrants will face their first task of fabricating their own race clothes from limited material supplied by Wild Africa Cream Liqueur. Entrants will then set off on a strenuous 24km route straight up into the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve where they will overnight at a basic campsite. On arrival at the campsite entrants will need to participate in a bow-and-arrow shooting.
On Sunday, contestants will greet the dawn as the race continues at 05h00 with a knob-kierie throwing. Once the activity has been completed, competitors will face a treacherous return trip along the 24km route to Church Street. On arrival, first teams will need to “turn fire” using the traditional turning stick method. The first team to successfully start a fire will be victorious and grab the title of the winner of the first-ever Survival Adventure Race.
According to event co-ordinator and survival enthusiast David Rabie, the race is a novel and cutting-edge concept that has never been done in this country before. “The Survival Adventure Race has been designed to bring participants closer to their African roots as they are forced to endure a Bushmen-like lifestyle for twenty-four hours. Contestants are isolated from their daily environment without any access to mobile phones or any form of modern technology. Competitors will experience the scorching midday sun, sleep under the stars and for a brief moment, be one with nature,” mentions Rabie.
The race is ideal as a corporate team-building exercise or as a school or university challenge and offers the perfect bonding opportunity for fathers and sons. Big Brother entrant Ferdinand Rabie and former rugby star Rob Louw have joined forces and will be challenging other celebrity teams to enter this race.
Teams can enter in the following categories: father and son, men, women, couples and under 18’s. Serious adventure athletes can participate in the gruelling “X-men” division, where competitors can choose between two different return routes – each with its own risks and challenges. Entry fees are R245 per entrant with special rates for students and teams of twenty at R125 per entrant. Amazing prizes such as a weekend getaway for two to the Sanbona Game reserve, wine hampers, Wild Africa Cream Liqueur hampers and SOSATI dinner vouchers are up for grabs for the ultimate survivors.
Don’t miss the action-packed “Wild Parties” on Saturday, 3 & 10 February 2007, at Denim and Diamonds in Stellenbosch. Survival Adventure Race entry forms will also be made available on these evenings.
