The Concept
Since their inception, Zulu Warrior Records events have always been strongly centered on a local context, creating event themes around the rich heritage of the South African Culture. Nagual, a prolific Cape Town based band has just enjoyed the release of their much awaited anthology 'Polar Shift' on the Zulu Warrior Records label. Similarly, past associations with such local icons as African Dope Records, Jorge Carlos (Opening Ceremony, ICC World Cup 2002) and Amapondo have created a strong following among conscious South Africans. Our events have always been driven by the aspiration to promote new and neglected musical talent in a setting unique to the South African Experience.
The Area
On an outing into the Cederberg in search of some remnants of the once prominent presence of the San people in the region, we discovered several caves with rock art on the barren hills outside the town of Clanwilliam. The idea was born to create a vehicle that would lift the rich history of the San people into the consciousness of the people living in the Cape Town area. We entered into negotiations with a local farmer about the use of a beautiful site nestled along the Doring River and subsequently launched our first In-San-ity Music Festival with the aim to create an awareness about the disappearance of a people that had once been the original inhabitants of the area. 350 people made the 250 km journey and experienced a 3 day outdoor event in nature's lap that provided non-stop entertainment by experienced local and international artists. A year later, we were back again and so were 450 revelers, supporting the festival in its positive growth. After the huge amount of positive and encouraging feedback received from the audience, we realized the importance of the message and decided that the festival could resonate even more with the public if the proceeds of it were to be charitably donated in support of the Preservation of the San culture.
2006
The in-San-ity 2006 is an event that will appeal to many at various levels. The experience will be an artistic, cultural and explorational experience of eclectic proportions. A collaboration of music, dance and visual arts in a setting that was for many years the original habitat of the Khoisan Culture, will uplift and breathe new life into the legacy of the real South African ancestors. At the festival, multiple exponents of the local music industry will be performing along side several international highlights. In-San-ity 2006 will boast three sound stages along the banks of the Doring river, one of which will be hosted on a beautiful island accessible only by boat, or by taking a splash and swimming across. All the stages will be themed to incorporate various music styles and displays of visual arts.
