| 8. Getting Married |
Marriage is a wonderful institution. Before entering into it, here are some useful tips that may make the wedding day (and those that follow) less stressful. |
1 |
Although it is a touchy topic, get the issue of antenuptial agreements out of the way before the marriage. There are really good reasons for antenuptial agreements besides divorce settlements (e.g. starting your own business). |
2 |
If one of the spouses has children, be sure to discuss and formalise your role in child support (taking into account where the child presently resides). |
3 |
Be sure to maximise and economise. Investigate where you, as a couple, get the best and cheapest offerings (not always the same thing). In other words, sometimes being a dependant on your spouse's (more comprehensive) medical aid is better than being a single member of your own. Also pay attention to car and household insurance. |
4 |
Make provision for the worst. Should your spouse's business become bankrupt or an injury make him/her unable to work for a while, you'll need to have a plan in place that assures you'll have enough to live on in the long term. By all means talk about your planning together, but make sure you have retirement annuities or pension plans in place that don't depend on your spouse being able to support you. Because you'll probably be contributing to the household, you should also consider a death and disability policy that takes the financial pressure off your spouse if something happens to you, and also offers some relief if you should be unable to work because of illness or injury. Think about getting a will. Remember to name beneficiaries on all your investments, including your retirement annuity. |
5 |
To combine or not to combine bank accounts, clothing accounts and finances in general. Many couples report being quite happy to maintain separate accounts, while contributing fairly to the financial responsibilities of the couple and looking after their own personal needs. |
6 |
You've registered at your favourite store for wedding gifts. If they're that important to you, don't forget to insure and/or specify them. |
