Captain Vanderdecken, who was sailing from the Netherlands in 1641, encountered a storm which prevented him from rounding Cape Point. He swore that he wound round the Cape at all costs. His ship sank and he was doomed to haunt the southern seas, trying to round the Cape in his phantom ship, the Flying Dutchman.
